Formerly called the Christian Service Committee, the Social Concerns Committee helps our parish community to serve our brothers and sisters in the world.
The Social Concerns Committee is comprised of the following parishioners:

Assumption B.V.M. Parish hosted a Work of Human Hands Fair Trade Sale on Saturday and Sunday, May 2nd and 3rd. This Sale is sponsored by the parish, A Better Footprint, and Catholic Relief Services through their Fair Trade program and partnership with SERRV. Buying Fair Trade products is also encouraged by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. The one-of-a-kind gifts, coffee or chocolate products, housewares or jewelry you will be able to purchase at the sale will enrich your life and help a family in another part of the world have a brighter future. Every purchase you make at the sale is in solidarity with our brothers and sisters around the world. Each purchase you make at our Fair Trade Sale enables an artisan or farmer to better provide for the basic necessities of life, to educate her or his children, and to work in a safe environment. Why have a Fair Trade Sale? By participating with Catholic Relief Services in their Fair Trade program, we are living the Gospel message of Jesus Christ. Fair Trade builds right relationships between buyers and sellers that are rooted in the principles of human dignity and solidarity.

Fair Trade
  • Respects human dignity
  • Promotes the common good
  • Advances economic justice
  • Empowers disadvantaged people
  • Connects us with the people who create the things we buy
  • Cultivates global solidarity

The CRS Fair Trade Program provides opportunities for us to bring these core values of our faith to bear on the choices we make as consumers - choices that have the power to lift our brothers and sisters out of poverty. Raphael Morales, a weaver who works with a cooperative called MCCH in Ecuador, tells how fair trade has benefitted his family and community: "Your orders help with food, school costs for my 3 children and help to make life's conditions better. We are artists and we depend on orders for our livelihood. Life is better. We can purchase our own looms." Mark the date on your calendar today and bring your checkbook. We look forward to seeing you at church on the weekend of May 2nd and 3rd for our Fair Trade Sale! Please join us in this celebration of our faith! SHOP IN SOLIDARITY! If you have any questions or would like to get involved please contact Janet Maroszek, Pastoral Minister.
